Former Pakistan veteran Wasim Akram has backed India to win the upcoming edition of the T20 World Cup. The tournament, that was last played in 2016 in India, will be staged in October – November in the same country. However, things could change given the Coronavirus situation in India and there is a possibility of the T20 extravaganza moving out of the country.

Irrespective of the venue, Wasim Akram feels that India have a great set of players who like to play a fearless brand of cricket which makes them the prime contender to lift the trophy. Akram further reckoned that England is a very dangerous side and is capable of winning the World Cup. He also opined that dark horses, New Zealand and West Indies can also pull off a surprise.

“I suppose, between the main teams, India appear favourites. They play fearless brand of T20 cricket. England is also at the top of the ladder. I think New Zealand too. And you never know about the West Indies. If their main players are in, they have a tendency to scare,” Akram said on ARY news.

Surprisingly, Akram didn’t look too confident about Pakistan’s chances, adding that while he would love to see Pakistan lift the title, there are certain areas that the Men in Green need to work on before they are forced into the category of favourites.

“Pakistan need to work on their team combination. Obviously, being a Pakistani, I would want Pakistan to win the World Cup. That will be a dream come true for all of us, especially the young captain, and if they need to improve their combination, find the best XI, they can fight. The problem of No. 5 and No. 6 needs to be solved,” Akram pointed out.

Pakistan last won the T20 World Cup in England in 2009, beating Sri Lanka in the final by eight wickets.
