Babar Azam's poor run of form in Test cricket continues as he returned with a single-digit score in the first innings of the Boxing Day Test. Having lost the first match by 360 runs, Pakistan are desperate to grab a victory in Melbourne to level the series. However, the Aussie bowlers, led by skipper Pat Cummins, put the hosts in command before stumps on Day 2.

After being asked to bat first, Australia were restricted to 318 in the first innings as Pakistan's bowlers staged a brilliant comeback. The visitors managed to pick up seven wickets but their batters failed to rise to the occasion, despite getting a good start. They lost opener Imam-ul-Haq early on, but Abdullah Shafique and captain Shan Masood steadied the ship with a 90-run partnership for the second wicket.ย

Shafique was dismissed after a well-disciplined half-century and Pakistan were on top as the scoreboard read 124-2. Australia trailed in the first two sessions, but with a 5-wicket final session and a 125-run deficit for the Men in Green, the game is nicely poised at the moment. Cummins opened the floodgates with the wicket of opener Shafique in the 34th over, before dismissing former Pakistan captain Babar in the very next over.ย

The right-handed batter pressed forward to block a good-length delivery from the rival skipper. He thought he had got the line covered, but the ball moved enough to go through the bat-pad gap. Babar was bamboozled but had to depart for just 1 run, much to the dismay of the fans. Meanwhile, Indian fans heavily trolled the Pakistan star batter on the X platform after his disappointing batting performance.

The ongoing series is Babar's first appearance since the 2023 ODI World Cup, where the Men in Green endured a poor campaign. Babar had a not-so-impressive outing in the premier tournament and he is still struggling in the longer format of the game. His lean patch in Test cricket is so evident as he managed to score just 162 runs throughout the year 2023. Notably, Babar returned with scores of 21 and 14 runs in the two innings of the first Test in Perth.ย ย
