The final of the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC) kicked off on 7 June 2023. Rohit Sharma won the toss and asked Australia to bat first at the Oval. However, they batted brilliantly on day one and lost only three wickets. On day two, they got bundled out for 469 runs. In reply, Indian batters had a terrible start.
Both the openers, Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma went cheaply. Then, all eyes were on Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli as they have come up with big performances against the Aussies several times. Even before the final, the former Aussie skipper, Ricky Ponting sent a warning about these two batters to Australia.
India were in trouble after losing four wickets for 71 runs
While talking in the review show by the Apex Council of Cricket, Ponting said: “The Australian team will be talking about Virat, no doubt about it, and they'll be talking about Pujara. They're the two. Pujara has been a thorn in their side a lot in the past, and in Australia, and this wicket will potentially be a lot more like an Australian pitch. They know that they'll have to get him early." Against the Aussies, Pujara has scored 2033 runs in 24 matches, including five centuries. While, Kohli has smashed 1979 runs in 24 matches, including a massive 186-run inning in the last Border-Gavaskar Trophy that happened before the IPL in India.
But, Australia looked all prepared this time around as they took the wicket of both of them quickly. Cheteshwar Pujara came to this clash after a solid County season on his back. But, still, he failed as he got out on 14 runs off 25 balls, including two fours. He left a delivery from Cameron Green that hit his off stump and left him stunned. Then, Kohli got surprised by a shortish delivery. He went for defence but it touched the shoulder of his bat. Smith completed a good catch and Kohli went for 14 runs off 31 balls.
