New Zealand announces ODI & T20I squads for India tour; Kane Williamson unavailable

On Tuesday, December 23, New Zealand Cricket announced ODI and T20I squads for the upcoming India tour, which is scheduled to start with a three-match ODI series on January 11 at the BCA Stadium in Kotambi, Vadodara.

Speaking about the ODI squad, Mitchell Santner, the skipper, has been rested, with all-rounder Michael Bracewell appointed as stand-in captain. Kane Williamson, Matt Henry, Mark Chapman, and Rachin Ravindra have also been rested or ruled out. 

Williamson has made himself unavailable with New Zealand Cricket confirming that the former captain is unavailable due to his SA20 commitments. On the other hand, Jayden Lennox has earned his maiden international call-up. 

Lennox has been rewarded for his consistent domestic performances, and head coach Rob Walter stated that the left-arm pacer has been on the management’s radar for some time and has had a good time with New Zealand A.

“Jayden has been an identified player of interest for some time and has some good New Zealand “A” experience under his belt. He's consistently been one of the top performers in white-ball cricket domestically for a number of seasons,” New Zealand Head Coach Rob Walter said

“Playing in the sub-continent is obviously very different to what we’re used to in New Zealand, so any opportunity we can get to expose our guys to those conditions can only be a good thing, especially prior to a T20 World Cup in the subcontinent,” he added.

Meanwhile, the T20I squad will have Santner back as captain of the team, which includes Devon Conway, Daryl Mitchell, James Neesham, Glenn Phillips, and Rachin Ravindra. The five-match T20I series is scheduled to start on January 21.
