The Border-Gavaskar Trophy is going to begin on 9 February 2023. The first Test will take place in Nagpur. This series will be a huge one for India as they will look to avoid a series loss in order to strengthen their chances in the final of the ongoing World Test Championship. Along with India, Sri Lanka also have an outside chance for qualification and regarding that the former Sri Lanka cricketer, Mahel Jayawardene came up with a bold prediction.

Currently, India are in the second spot with 58.93% while the Lankans are in the third spot with 53.33%. So, the Men in Blue will face the Aussies in this upcoming four-Test match series at home while Sri Lanka will face New Zealand in New Zealand in a two-match Test series. So, in the review show of the Governing Body of Cricket, Mahela Jayawardene came up with a prediction of Australia winning the series in India by 2-1.

Sri Lanka will keep an eye on the final result of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy between India and Australia

Jayawardene said: “I think it's always going to be a great series. I think Indian conditions and how the Australian batsmen tackle that, they do have a really good bowling unit and how do the Indian batsmen tackle that … it depends on how each team starts the series and who's got that momentum. But it will be fascinating. It's difficult to predict, but being a Sri Lankan, I’m hoping that Australia can go all the way. Probably a 2-1 win for Australia, but it's going to be a tough one.” In the context of the World Test Championship final, if the result of the series goes in favor of the Aussies and Sri Lanka manage to produce an excellent series result in New Zealand, then the Lankans will get a spot in the final.

Regarding that, Jayawardene said: “I think at the start of the Test Championship, the two-year cycle, Sri Lanka was ranked seventh or eighth in the world. They’ve played some amazing cricket, consistent cricket throughout, and are right up there having an opportunity to play in that Test Championship (final). New Zealand are a top team and so it'll be a fascinating series and I hope that Sri Lanka can pull that off. And hopefully, Australia can do Sri Lanka a few favors in India, which is also going to be a tough, tough series.” But, after such a comment, team India fans were not happy and slammed the former Sri Lanka skipper on social media platforms. Currently, he is the Mumbai franchise's global head of performance. Hence, some fans also claimed him to get removed from the franchise.
