The much-awaited Indian T20 League 2023 began in Ahmedabad on 31 March. It is the 16th edition of the tournament. On the opening day, the Gujarat franchise took on Chennai at their home ground. After a terrible last season, Chennai fans were hoping for a much better season from MS Dhoni and his men. 

While Hardik Pandya was looking for a win to kick off their journey to defend the title this year. However, fans also enjoyed a great opening ceremony before the match. Famous singer, Arijit Singh and two actresses, Rashmika Mandanna and Tamannah Bhatia came up with some entertaining performances. 

Gujarat handed a five-wicket loss to Chennai in the tournament opener

Speaking of the match, Gujarat won the toss and opted to field first. For Chennai, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway came out to open the innings. But, Conway scored just one run, and then, Moeen Ali came in at the number three position. He departed after scoring 23 runs. Ben Stokes was looking for a great debut but he failed also. Stokes scored just seven runs. Gaikwad was the star of the show as he scored 92 runs off 50 balls, including four fours and nine sixes. In the end, MS Dhoni scored a quickfire 14* runs off seven balls, including one six and one four. Ultimately, they put up a score of 178 runs for seven wickets in 20 overs. For Gujarat, Mohammed Shami, Rashid Khan, and Alzarri Joseph took two scalps each while Josh Little took one.

In reply, Shubman Gill ad Wriddhiman Saha came out to open the innings for Gujarat. However, Tushar Deshpande became the first player who came in as an impact player for Ambati Rayudu. Sai Sudharsan came in place of Kane Williamson as the Kiwi got an injury while fielding for Gujarat. Gill showed his class again as he scored 63 runs off 36 balls. Saha scored 25 runs while Sudharsan managed 22 runs. Pandya failed cheaply for eight runs. Then, Rashid Khan and Rahul Tewatia ensured their team’s victory with their cameos. Gujarat chased down the target in 19.2 overs with five wickets in hand.
