The middle order for India has been very rickety off late. People are not sure about their spots ahead of the 2023 World Cup. Injuries to key players ahead of the tournament have not helped. The number four slot has been a thorn in India's back since the 2019 World Cup. Even at present, India have not zeroed in on the number 4 slot.
Speaking about India's middle order conundrum RP Singh said that if KL Rahul is unavailable and fails to recover in time from injury then Ishan Kishan could slot in at number 5 in the middle order in place of Rahul. “It doesn’t work out with just one chance. According to me, Ishan should play at No. 5 if you see him at No. 5 for the (ODI) World Cup. If KL Rahul is unavailable in the future, Ishan Kishan is his backup option,” Singh said on Jio Cinema.
Gill's performance in West Indies has saddened our hearts- RP Singh
“So he has to learn to play at No. 5. When Rohit Sharma comes, Rohit and Shubman Gill will open, although Gill’s performance has slightly saddened our hearts. But still if both of them open, where can Ishan Kishan get a place, it is down the order,” Singh added. Kishan has been in good ODI form in the recent series against West Indies.
With scores of 52, 55 and 77 behind him. He gave a good account of himself in the three ODIs. But the catch is that he scored all the runs at the top of the order. Now since the top-order slots will be taken by Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan, if he gets a place in the side will have to bat in the middle order.
With Rahul and Shreyas Iyer doubtful of making a comeback it remains to be seen what options India explore in the middle order. Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid have their hands full before making the final fifteen for the World Cup squad. The advantage for India is that since the World Cup is at home, it will be easy to call for replacements in case of any unforeseen events.

shan isnt at fit at no 5; he should play inside top 4 max. If KL is unavailable, Hardik should bat 5; with SKY at 6 and Jaddu at 7. Ishan should play at 4 if Iyer is unfit.
