Former England captain and commentator Michael Vaughan has heaped praise on the Indian Test captain Shubman Gill for showing exceptional grit, concentration, and dedication not to throw away his way during the first innings of the ongoing Birmingham Test.
Notably, Gill went on to score a 269-run knock before giving away his wicket to Josh Tongue in the last session of Day 2. Vaughan reckoned that England batters made mistakes to lose their wickets in the dying moments of the day. England ended Day 2 at 77/3 in 20 overs, trailing by 510 runs.
"When you see someone play so well, the first thing, and we have all been talking about it, that it is a flat wicket. When England went out to bat, they lost three wickets because they made three mistakes, Shubman Gill did not make a mistake. So, I am going to give him a huge amount of credit for his concentration, his dedication to making sure that he can stay in, and then the pure strokeplay," Vaughan said on Cricbuzz.
Vaughan asserted that he has seen a lot of great innings, but he has rated Gill’s 269-run knock up there as he came into this game after his team was 0-1 down from the Leeds Test and he is captaining the team only in the second game in his career.
"I've seen many many great innings, and that is up there with those great innings, because someone that is 0-1 down in the series, is captaining his country for the second time, the pressure is on, the talk of the team being a negative one, to walk out and score that amount of runs and put you team in such a dominating position to allow your bowlers to run in hard for an hour and get three wickets, that is why I rank it as such a high valued innings," he added.
Furthermore, Vaughan stated that Gill has improved his batting technique coming into the England series. Earlier, Gill used to get LBW or bowled leaving a gap between his bat and pads. However, the former England skipper feels Gill has improved a lot in that aspect.
"England have tried challenging that LBW that Gill has been vulnerable to in the past, but I think at the minute his technique is so good that he's given him the chance to just say, 'You know what, you can bowl whatever you want, my technique will look after me.' This is his time to create a legacy as a leader, and as a batter," he stated.
