Mumbai Indians (MI) had a good season last year but failed to win the IPL trophy for a record-breaking sixth time. Under Hardik Pandya’s captaincy, they qualified for the playoffs, but in the second playoff, they suffered a five-wicket loss against the eventual runners-up, Punjab Kings (PBKS). This time, in the upcoming 2026 season, Pandya will look to cross the finishing line and after the mini-auction, MI have managed to build a strong and versatile 25-member squad.
Interestingly, before the auction, MI retained 20 players, keeping the core of the squad intact. Hence, with the lowest available purse (INR 2.75 crore), they headed into the auction with just five spots to be filled. They also traded in three players — Sherfane Rutherford from Gujarat Titans (GT), Mayank Markande from Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), and Shardul Thakur from Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).
In the auction, MI bagged experienced South Africa opener Quinton de Kock, who is currently busy playing the ongoing five-match T20I series between South Africa and India. Eyes will also be on names like Danish Malewar, Atharva Ankolekar, and Mayank Rawat, on whom the franchise has shown faith based on their potential.
The MI management did a fantastic job by bringing in all-rounder Shardul Thakur, as he will provide the much-needed balance in the playing XI. With both the new and old ball, he is expected to take responsibility, along with contributing some power-hitting at the back end of the innings.
MI fans will also hope to see Rohit Sharma back in full throttle, as he is again expected to lead the batting order, followed by stars like Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, and Hardik Pandya.
