MI Playing XI, IPL 2025: Best probable playing XI of Mumbai Indians

Like the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), the Mumbai Indians (MI) will be aiming for their sixth Indian Premier League (IPL) title in the 2025 season. Ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction, MI retained their core players: Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Rohit Sharma, and Tilak Varma.

At the auction, they added 18 players to form a 23-member squad as they look to redeem themselves after a disappointing campaign last year. The 2024 season was a disaster for MI, as they finished last under the captaincy of Hardik Pandya. Fans were vocal about their displeasure, particularly over the decision to replace Rohit with Hardik as captain. 

Before the mega auction, there were speculations about Rohit's future with the franchise. However, MI retained him and will continue to place their trust in Hardik's leadership for the upcoming season. Rohit will open the innings, and the dynamic England batter Will Jacks is likely to partner him at the top. 

Suryakumar will take the crucial number three position, bringing his trademark consistency and flair. Tilak, who recently smashed two back-to-back T20I centuries in South Africa, is expected to anchor the innings at number four. Skipper Hardik Pandya will bat at number five, leading from the front with his all-round abilities.

At number six, Naman Dhir adds excitement as a promising young talent. South African wicketkeeper-batter Ryan Rickelton is expected to play a dual role, providing finishing power with the bat and taking over the wicketkeeping duties. However, MI might consider opening with Rickelton to accommodate New Zealand's Bevon Jacobs in the middle order. 

Jacobs, known for his explosive batting, was one of the breakout stars of the 2023-24 Super Smash. MI’s spin department has been a concern for fans after the auction, but New Zealand’s Mitchell Santner will be a key figure. Apart from his left-arm spin, Santner’s batting offers depth to the lineup.  

MI's pace trio of Jasprit Bumrah, Deepak Chahar, and New Zealand’s Trent Boult is expected to be one of the most lethal combinations this season. Depending on conditions, Reece Topley might also get opportunities to make an impact.
