Speaking of the match, Rohit Sharma opted to bowl first and confirmed that Ravichandran Ashwin failed to make a place in the final playing XI. He said: "We are gonna bowl. Just the conditions and also its a bit overcast as well. We gotta play good cricket and come out on top. We got 4 seamers and 1 spinner that is Ravindra Jadeja. Its always been tough as Ashwin has been such a match winner for us over the years and leaving him on such an occasion has been a tough decision but you got to do the things that is needed for the team and eventually we came up with that decision.”

Australia skipper, Pat Cummins said: “We would have to bowl as well. Hopefully, it will not make a lot of difference as it will spin a little bit on Day 4 and 5. Yeah, no Hazlewood, so Scotty Boland, Lyon, me, and Starc. And the batters are the same as usual. Hopefully, looks like a little bit of grass and it should be a key weapon. We have been here for ten days. Some of us have been even longer. We are fresh for this." However, India made a good start as Usman Khawaja scored a duck off 10 balls before getting out to Mohammed Siraj. After the first 10 overs, Australia reached 26 runs for one wicket with David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne at the crease.
