Marnus Labuschagne, who is certain that he is now far clearer in his own game than he was in past summers, feels he would have no trouble opening for Australia in the forthcoming Ashes. In Friday's Sheffield Shield encounter between Queensland and NSW, Labuschagne was denied another opportunity to bat as the game ended in an early draw.
Theo Doropoulos, a former cricket player and Seven journalist, believes Labuschagne will get a Test return in recognition of his outstanding play in the first few months of the season. However, as opening hopefuls have failed time and time again in the recent Sheffield Shield matches, it will be alongside Usman Khawaja rather than at his chosen No. 3.
Marnus Labuschagne says he would have no issue opening for Australia in the Ashes, confident he is now much clearer in his own game than in recent summers. All-rounders Cameron Green and Beau Webster would both be able to remain in the lineup if Labuschagne were to replace Konstas at the top.
Throughout the summer, Labuschagne has stated that his preferred position is number three, but he has also stated that he would be open to returning to the club. He was dropped from the team after getting out for 17 and 22 in this year's World Test Championship final against South Africa, the only two times he has done so at the Test level.
“I mean, that’s part of the game. There is a tipping point, but it’s something I thrive on — proving the doubters wrong and being able to find a way. Missing those West Indies Tests gave me the chance to think, ‘This is where I want to be and this is how I’m going to get there’.”
Australia is debating its opening combination at the time of his remarks. Technical issues have raised questions about whether Sam Konstas, who opened during the West Indies series, should stay in his position or be replaced by a more seasoned player. Ahead of the Ashes, Labuschagne's adaptability might solidify his place in the selectors' plans.
