DC defeated GT (Source - Twitter)
The 44th match of the Indian Premier League 2023 witnessed a low-scoring thriller between Delhi Capitals (DC) and the defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Tuesday, May 2. DC did an unexpected thing as they defeated the table toppers GT by 5 runs.
Earlier, DC chose to bat first after winning the toss, but the decision proved wrong as they didn't have a good start after losing their opener Philip Salt on the first delivery of the game. But little did DC know that they’d be suffering a massive blow in the very next over when star Australian left-hander and DC skipper David Warner was run out after a minor error of calls with the young right-hander Priyam Garg.
And the remaining top order hitters were unable to provide something special as GT’s star pacer Mohammed Shami was breathing fire with his deadly variations and speed and ended up taking 4 wickets while conceding only 11 runs in his 4 overs quota.
However, later the young right-hander Aman Khan and DC’s star allrounder Axar Patel steadied the ship but their scoring rate was pretty slow. However, Axar was later dismissed by the speedster Mohit Sharma after he added 50 off of 48 balls with Aman. The right-hander continued and hit his first IPL fifty. Ripal Patel also had a useful cameo further down the order, both of which helped the side to a respectable total of 130 runs.
Brilliant bowling by Ishant Sharma
In the second innings, DC got the perfect start with a wicket maiden from Khaleel Ahmed, and then Anrich Nortje dismissed the other opener, Shubman Gill. Vijay Shankar was deceived by a top-quality Ishant Sharma's knuckleball, and then David Miller was out playing an uncharacteristic shot for a duck.
GT found a way back through skipper Hardik Pandya and Abhinav Manohar, and they batted out the tough stages but ate up too many bowls. But both couldn't do much in the end. However, there came a sting in the tale as Rahul Tewatia walked out and smoked three consecutive sixes, but it wasn't to be his night. It was to be the night of a forgotten man of Indian cricket as Ishant Sharma held his nerve to defend 12 off the last over and gave Delhi a victory.
