“Looks like they are 28 or 30 years old” - Madan Lal heaps praise on Virat Kohli & Rohit Sharma after their Ranchi heroics

Madan Lal praised Virat Kohli (135 runs) and Rohit Sharma (57 runs) after their Ranchi ODI heroics, saying they look as fit as "28 or 30-year-olds." He insisted the decision on their 2027 World Cup future is theirs alone.

Former Indian cricketer and selector, Madan Lal, has heaped praise on the Indian talismanic batting duo of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, who have been in a rich vein of form in the 50-over format.

Speaking exclusively to PTI Videos on the sidelines of Asian Legends League Season 2, Madan Lal has stated that the veteran batters should be allowed to take a call on their future, adding that there are no concerns about their fitness and form of late.

“It is their decision and not anybody else’s. So (it should be) whatever they decide,” Lal told PTI Videos.

“But the way they are playing the ODI series shows that they are still very, very fresh and look like they are some 28 or 30 years old. The way Virat Kohli is running (between the wickets) while taking the singles and hitting the balls. It’s nice to see (the way they are going),” he added.

Notably, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma announced their retirement from the longest format of the game ahead of the England tour earlier this year. On the other hand, they bid adieu to T20Is after the successful ICC T20 World Cup 2024 campaign.

Furthermore, Madan Lal, who also served as a selector, when the legendary Indian batter Sachin Tendulkar was appointed as the Indian captain, asserted that selectors and coaches are the initial ones to be criticised when the team fails to do well.

“The first person to be criticised is the coach and the selector, I have been both, so they will get the criticism, never mind. As long as your conscience is right, that matters,” he said.

“If the team is not doing good then it becomes a case of (critics) going after the selectors. But if the team is not doing well then it is also a calculative thing that your coach is as good as your team,” he noted.

“But you do make mistakes. I, as a coach, when Sachin was… I have made mistakes and they are part of the game,” he concluded.
