Kevin Pietersen has come under fire from Nathan Lyon for claiming that Australia sent him to bat to get a concussion replacement if the off-spinner is struck by a bouncer. Lyon claimed that after losing a mate to a head injury, he considered this reasoning to be completely absurd. Lyon referred to the time when a bouncer fatally knocked out Phillip Hughes at the SCG in 2014.

“Test cricket’s been around a lot longer than I have and injuries are part of the game,” Lyon told reporters on Saturday. “I have heard comments that I only went out there to get hit in the head, but I’m really against that. I have lost one of my mates due to being hit in the head, so I think that’s a really poor conversation being had if I’m honest with you. But no, I don’t think for soft tissue injuries (there should be substitutes). But for concussion, it’s a pretty big risk, so I’m happy with that, but any other injuries, no. That’s my opinion,” he added.

England need 257 runs to win on Day 5

Speaking between innings on Sky Sports, England Test great Kevin Pietersen claimed that the Aussies sent Nathan Lyon out there in case he suffered a concussion to replace him with Todd Murphy. “Imagine if he (Lyon) had been hit on the head and got a concussion, he’d have got a like-for-like replacement and a world-class spinner (Murphy), based on how he performed in India, it gives food for thought,” he remarked.

Despite suffering a serious calf strain, Nathan Lyon limped out to bat on Day 4 of the second Ashes Test. He only faced 13 balls and scored four runs, but his effort was recognised by the England team and the English crowd, who gave him a standing ovation.

Talking of the game, England are currently batting and have secured an overnight score of 114/4 with Ben Ducket just surpassing his half-century. They need 257 runs to win from the final day’s play while the Aussies will be eyeing to pick up the six wickets to extend their lead to 2-0.
