Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) had a disappointing IPL 2025 season, finishing in seventh place with 12 points from 14 games and a net run rate of -0.376. However, one of the brightest spots for them in the recently concluded season was Digvesh Rathi. He picked up 14 wickets in 13 games and delivered some crucial performances for the team in key situations.
Now, a video of him taking five wickets in five consecutive balls in a local game has gone viral on social media. Reacting to the clip, LSG owner Sanjeev Goenka shared his excitement, writing: “Stumbled upon this clip of Digvesh Rathi taking 5 in 5 in a local T20 game. Just a glimpse of the talent that made him a breakout star for @LucknowIPL in IPL 2025.” In the video, Rathi clean bowled three batters and trapped two LBW during the spell.
He also made headlines with his ‘notebook’ celebration. However, his on-field aggression brought disciplinary trouble as well. He served a one-match suspension and was fined 50% of his match fee after accumulating five demerit points during the season. His first offence came against Punjab Kings (PBKS) on April 1, for which he received one demerit point.
On April 4, against Mumbai Indians (MI), he committed his second offence and was given two more demerit points. Later, against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), he was involved in a heated exchange with SRH opener Abhishek Sharma after dismissing him, which resulted in a 50% match fee fine and two additional demerit points.
In total, Rathi accumulated five demerit points, leading to his suspension for one match.
He hit the headlines once again in the clash against the eventual champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), when he attempted a non-striker run-out to dismiss RCB wicketkeeper-batter Jitesh Sharma. However, after several replays, it was found that by the laws of the game, Jitesh was not out, as Rathi had completed his bowling action before the attempt.
LSG skipper Rishabh Pant also withdrew the appeal, and the incident sparked widespread debate. Despite these controversies, Rathi's overall performance has raised expectations among LSG fans, and much will be expected from him in the next season.
