On 9 June 2023, day three of the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC) final took palace at the Oval between India and Australia. Australia batted first and scored 469 runs in their first innings. In reply, India finished day two with 151 runs on the board for five wickets. Ajinkya Rahane came out to bat with KS Bharat.

However, Bharat got out early and then, Shardal Thakur came out to bat. Thakur took two wickets for 83 runs in 23 overs. So, fans were hoping for another crucial contribution from him with the bat. However, he did not disappoint as Shardul Thakur put up a partnership of 109 runs off 145 balls for the seventh wicket. However, Thakur got out after scoring 51 runs off 109 balls, including six fours.

Shardul Thakur’s knock helped India to avoid the follow-on

Seeing such a gritty knock from the star all-rounder, fans went crazy and shared their views on social media. India finally got bundled out for 296 runs and thus, the Aussie managed a lead of 173 runs going into the second innings. His solid partnership with Rahane helped India to avoid the follow-on. India were in all sorts of trouble after losing five wickets for 151 runs and they needed 118 runs to avoid the follow-on. After this knock, Shardul Thakur entered an elite list. He is now the third visiting batter to score three consecutive fifty-plus scores at the Oval behind Don Bradman and Allan Border.

Speaking of the match, India fell short by 173 runs in their first innings while Australia scored 469 runs. For the Aussies, Pat Cummins took three wickets for 83 runs in 20 overs. Along with him, Cameron Green, Mitchell Starc, and Scott Boland took two wickets each. The remaining wicket was taken by Nathan Lyon. However, Green took the wicket of Thakur. After Rahane’s dismissal, he also put up a quick partnership of 23 runs off 16 balls with Mohammed Shami for the ninth wicket.
