On 6 April 2023, KKR locked horns with RCB at the Eden Gardens in the ongoing IPL. After losing the season opener against Punjab Kings, fans were hoping to see better performances from Kolkata players like Shardul Thakur, Andre Russell, and others. Before this season, Kolkata traded Thakur from Delhi Capitals at INR 10.75 Cr.

So, fans were hoping to see the star all-rounder performing for the franchise this year. However, after joining the KKR camp ahead of the season, Shardul Thakur said that he was excited to join the franchise. He also said that Kolkata has always had a special feeling for him and hence, he would look to create many more records with KKR.

In a video posted by KKR, Shardul Thakur said:  "I'm feeling excited to be a part of the Knight Riders family. Obviously, a two-time champion team. Eden Gardens is one of the stadiums in India which has the biggest support. So, whenever I am going to step out on the field as a Knight Rider, it's going to be amazing. Kolkata always has a special feeling. The Indian team has also created so many records here. Hopefully our team, KKR, we will also create many more records on this ground".

However, in the first match against Punjab, he had a disappointing outing. Thakur conceded 43 runs in four overs while scoring just eight runs off three balls with the bat. But, in the second game, he did not disappoint his fans. Shardul Thakur scored 68 runs off 29 balls, including nine fours and three sixes. He also stitched a partnership of 103 runs with Rinku Singh for the sixth wicket. Rinku Singh also scored 46 runs off 33 balls, including two fours and three sixes. Thus, KKR posted 204 runs for seven wickets in 20 overs against RCB and fans lauded the performance of Thakur with some funny memes.
