Former New Zealand middle-order batter Ross Taylor has stated that the depth in India’s T20I squad meant that a player like Shreyas Iyer had to be left out of the Asia Cup 2025 squad by the Indian national selection committee.
Iyer, who had two consecutive successful IPL seasons for the Kolkata Knight Riders and the Punjab Kings, failed to make it to the final 15-man squad for the Asia Cup, scheduled to start in the United Arab Emirates on Tuesday, September 9.
"I haven’t seen the side yet so can’t say. (But) when you can leave that type of quality out, you've got to be pretty comfortable with the depth of your squad," Taylor told PTI Videos on the sidelines of a CLT10 League event.
Furthermore, Taylor also heaped praise on the new Indian Test captain Shubman Gill, who propelled Team India to a 2-2 series scoreline in the recently concluded Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England.
"It was a great series against England, whenever you go in the foreign conditions in Test cricket, especially these days, you have to take it very well. He has played in great spirits and led from the front,” he added.
It’s important to note that Taylor is all set to represent the Supreme Stallions in the CLT10 League, which started on Friday, August 22. Taylor is among eight former international cricketers to represent in the campaign.
"It has gone full circle, started playing with the tennis ball, and now finishing my career playing with the tennis ball, it's a great concept of 10 overs," Taylor said.
"The way these players go out and express themselves there, it is an opportunity to go out and showcase their talent, and I am sure that as the tournament goes on, we will get to know about these players even more," he concluded.
India’s T20I squad for Asia Cup 2025: Surya Kumar Yadav (C), Shubman Gill (VC), Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Jitesh Sharma (WK), Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Varun Chakaravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav, Sanju Samson (WK), Harshit Rana, Rinku Singh.
