The much-awaited Ashes 2023 series finally kicked off on June 16 as Australia and England went head to head at the Edgbaston in Birmingham. England skipper Ben Stokes won the toss and elected to bat first as the pitch looked quite flat and considering this Stokes thought they could get a big total in the first innings.

Meanwhile, England’s young batter Harry Brook came to bat at the no. 5 spot and was batting brilliantly before he was involved in one of the unluckiest ways of dismissal. Australia’s veteran spinner Nathan Lyon bowled a short delivery which surprisingly got extra bounce from the pitch and it lobbed up off Brook’s thigh pad. After which the ball lands between the batter and the stumps, and then crashed into the stumps. Keeper, short leg, batter nobody knew where the ball was going.

Very special moment for me and the team: Ben Stokes

After winning the toss, Stokes talked about the series and said that it is a special moment for him as it was his first Ashes as a captain. He also said that the team is very happy to have their star allrounder Moeen Ali back in the team, who, earlier took retirement from the longest format of the game. He replaces their veteran off-spinner Jack Leach as he is suffering from injury.

Very proud to be here with all the hype around, very special moment for me and the team. It has been tough at times with the energy, but that has been something we are good at in the past. Happy to have Mo back, unfortunate injury to Leachy. I've seen Mo produce some great performances in the past, we know what he can bring to the team.” Stokes was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.

Australian skipper Pat Cummins also talked about his team after the toss and said, "Tough to manage the workloads, we'll assess things week by week, but that is a good problem to have. Good preparation to win the WTC final, we went into that fresh, we feel well suited and we are now eager to go. England will come at us, but that's okay." Cummins was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.
