Indian team management and skipper Rohit Sharma have managed to stun the fans at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Rajkot. In the ongoing third ODI against Australia, the team has decided to open the batting with Washington Sundar alongside Rohit Sharma. Ahead of the game, it was reported in the media that Ishan Kishan will open the batting. However, the left-hander went ill and Virat Kohli was supposed to take his place.

However, to the surprise of the fans watching it from the stadium or from their living rooms, Sundar is opening the batting. In the first few balls, he was struggling to rotate the strike. However, after hitting his first four in the sixth over against Josh Hazlewood, he has looked comfortable at the crease. Talking about the game, the Men In Blue are 59/0 in eight overs with Sundar batting at 11 off 23 balls at the time of writing.

Washington Sundar had a decent outing with the ball

The all-rounder played his first international game after going empty-handed during the Asia Cup 2023 final. In that game, Mohammed Siraj and others ensured Sri Lanka were skittled for 50 runs. Meanwhile, coming back to the ongoing game, Sundar had a decent outing as he gave only 48 runs in his 10 overs.

The other bowlers had an off-day for the first 28 overs. They managed to make a comeback as they have rather restricted the visitors to 352/7. At one stage, they were 212/1 in 28 overs. In the last 22 overs, the Asian side took six wickets and helped themselves by not letting the Aussies get to 400-plus total. In one of the rare instances, no batter could get his hundred from the Kangaroos.

At the time of writing, Sharma has amassed 50 off 31 balls and the team has reached 72/0 in 10 overs. The last time India chased down a 350-plus total was in the 2013 series at home. During that series, India did it twice in the series.
