The first match of the two-match Test series between West Indies and India is all set to begin on 12 July in Dominica. However, ahead of the test, all eyes were on the Indian team management regarding the final playing XI. On the eve of the clash, skipper Rohit Sharma came up with an update regarding his opening partner.

He confirmed that youngster, Yashasvi Jaiswal will be given a debut and he will replace Shubman Gill as Rohit’s opening partner. Therefore, Gill will play at number three as Cheteshwar Pujara has been dropped from the squad. Listening to that, fans shared their mixed views on social media.

During a media interaction, Rohit said that Jaiswal is a promising talent and he can fulfill the need of having a top-order left-handed batter in Team India’s lineup. He said: "Indian cricket desperately needed a left-hander and we found a very good player. Looks very promising." He also shared that Gill personally had a talk with head coach Rahul Dravid as he wants to play at the number three position.

"Shubman Gill will play at No. 3 because he wants to play at three. He told Rahul bhai that he has played all of his cricket at No. 3 and No. 4 and that he can do better for the team at No. 3. It helps us too as it creates a left-right opening combination. This is what we are trying and hopefully, this becomes a long-term thing as we have been desperate for a left-hander. We have got that left-hander in Jaiswal and let's hope that he performs well for the team and he can really make that spot his own," he further added. 

Meanwhile, Rohit also suggested that they are most likely to go with a combination of two spinners and three pacers. So, it will be interesting to see among Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Axar Patel who will miss out on the playing XI.
