The 16th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) resumed on Monday with the Southern Derby between Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. The RCB team is in a winning mood following a convincing win over Delhi Capitals at home in their most recent game, but CSK enters the game reeling after a heartbreaking loss to Rajasthan Royals at the Chepauk.

After winning the toss, Faf du Plessis decided to bowl first. Ruturaj Gaikwad, the Chennai Super Kings opener, was dismissed for a cheap three off six balls. Devon Conway (83 off 45) and Ajinkya Rahane (37 off 20), who helped them recover, raised the total to 90/2. In his innings of 52 off 27, Shivam Dube appeared to be in excellent form. Ambati Rayudu (14 off of 6) and Moeen Ali (19 off of 9) added their finishing flourishes, bringing the team total in 20 overs to 226/6.

All six of the RCB's bowlers—Mohammed Siraj, Wayne Parnell, Vyshak Vijay Kumar, Glenn Maxwell, Wanindu Hasaranga, and Harshal Patel—used in the match were successful in claiming one wicket each.

After opener Virat Kohli was removed by Akash Singh for six runs, the home team's pursuit of the target got off to a shaky start. Following the former skipper, a top-order batter, Mahipal Lomror went for a five-ball duck as RCB lost two wickets in the span of two overs. They were able to regain momentum, though, thanks to captain Faf du Plessis (62 off 33) and Glenn Maxwell (76 off 36). Suyash Prabhudessai (19 off 10) and Dinesh Karthik (28 off 14) gave it their all to chase down a victory, but they finally failed by 8 runs. With stats of 3/45 in four overs, Tushar Deshpande continued to be the bowler of choice for CSK.

The Sunrisers Hyderabad, who appear to have found their form again in the sixteenth IPL, will next host the Mumbai Indians, who have also recovered with two straight victories after a typically disappointing start to their season. For the Deccan side, the formula is the same: two wins in a row after two losses in their first four games of the season.
