Sanju Samson got only two chances in the recently concluded three-match ODI series in West Indies. However, in the second ODI, he got out on just nine runs while in the last match, he scored a quickfire 51. But, Samson might have missed a chance to convert that fifty into a big score.
After that knock, he talked with the broadcaster and said: “It feels really great to spend some time in the middle, score some runs and contribute for your country. I had different plans for different players, I wanted to use my feet and dominate the lengths of the bowlers.” He also compared the pitches that were used in two different venues for the second and third games respectively.
“He played an impactful knock, whether, at four or five, he has done it in the past.” - Mohammad Kaif on Sanju Samson
Samson said: “That (Kensington Oval) was a bit damp, but this (surface) looks a bit dry. With the new ball, it was coming on nicely, but as the ball got old it was holding up and became slightly tough against the spinners. It was not easy to get that score, credit goes to the middle-order batters for hanging in and getting that score.” However, India are most likely not to have the services of Rishabh Pant in the World Cup. So, Ishan Kishan and Samson could be the options on whom they could depend a lot.
If KL Rahul gets fit, then he would join the race as well. But, on 2 August, during the launch of Amrit Mathur's book 'Pitchside', the former Team India player, Mohammad Kaif said that Samson is already ready for the mega event and he should be in the World Cup squad. Kaif said: "I am massively impressed by Samson. He played an impactful knock, whether, at four or five, he has done it in the past. Sending Kishan or Axar Patel in the middle order is not a great idea. You need someone who can play left-arm spin, leg spin and Samson can do that. His knock in the third ODI came under pressure and he is ready for the World Cup.”
