On 13 April 2023, Gujarat Giants (GT) locked horns with Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the ongoing IPL. However, it was the first time when these teams played against each other at Mohali. PBKS lost their last match against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) while GT suffered a loss against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

So, both teams were looking for a comeback into the winning ways in the ongoing tournament. Hardik Pandya missed the last match but he made a comeback as the skipper of GT. At the toss, Pandya won it and asked PBKS to bat first. GT also handed a debut cap to the veteran pacer Mohit Sharma.

GT defeated PBKS by six wickets in IPL 2023

For PBKS, Prabhsimran Singh and the skipper, Shikhar Dhawan came out to open the innings. But, Mohammed Shami struck on his first over as Prabhsimran scored a two-ball duck. Dhawan also failed cheaply for eight runs off eight balls. Then, Matthew Short played some shots and scored 36 runs off 24 balls, including six fours and one six. After that, Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Jitesh Sharma, Shahrukh Khan, and Sam Curran came up with some small contributions. Finally, PBKS scored 153 runs for eight wickets in 20 overs. For GT, Mohit Sharma grabbed two wickets while the other four bowlers picked up one wicket each. 

For the chase, Shubman Gill and Wriddhiman Saha came out as openers. Both of them gave a good start as they reached 50 runs in the first five overs. Saha got out after scoring 30 runs off 19 balls, including five fours. Then, Sai Sudharsan failed to play a fluent knock as his struggle came to an end after scoring 19 runs off 20 balls. After that, Pandya’s poor form with the bat continued as he got out on eight runs. But, Shubman Gill played a gem of a knock and scored 67 runs off 49 balls. Thus, GT won the match by six wickets as they chased down the target in 19.5 overs.
