“Ideally, in the top six, I would like to see two left-handers.” - Ravi Shastri

As per recent reports, it is most unlikely to see Pant in action for the Men in Blue in the upcoming 2023 ODI World Cup in India. He missed the IPL 2023 for Delhi Capitals (DC) and missed the World Test Championship (WTC) final also against Australia. However, on 7 June, the fixture of that mega event got announced. India will look to win the trophy despite not having the services of Pant. Notable, in Pant’s absence, India will struggle to have any left-handed batter in their top batting order. Only Ravindra Jadeja is a left-handed batter available in the line-up.

Regarding that, the former Team India Coach, Ravi Shastri opened up in a conversation on The Week. He said: "You need to strike the right balance. Do you think a left-hander will make a difference at the top? It does not have to be opening, but in the top three or four. You have to weigh all those options. Ideally, in the top six, I would like to see two left-handers. You have Ishan Kishan. In the wicketkeeping department, you have Sanju . But the left-handers, you have Jaiswal, Tilak Varma. There is enough left-handed talent that can replace any senior player at the moment. There are so many youngsters. There is Jaiswal and, I might miss out a few here, Tilak Varma, Nehal Wadhera. There is Sudharsan, who played so well in the final. There is Jitesh Sharma".
