Delhi Capitals became the first team to be eliminated from the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 after losing to Punjab Kings on Saturday. The David Warner-led side are lying at the bottom of the points table. However, the situation in the top half of the table has changed as Punjab took sixth place after their performance on Saturday evening. They have 12 points in their kitty, and with two more games to go, they are very much in contention for the knock-outs.

Following their elimination, DC fans took to Twitter to recall Shreyas Iyer's stint as DC captain, the only skipper who could take DC to their one and only IPL final. However, his injury the following season kept him out, with Rishabh Pant named the captain. Later, he moved to KKR and assumed captaincy for the team from Eastern India. This season, Iyer has not been able to play a part in the IPL following his injury that keeps him out of the lucrative league and possibly the Test Championship final as well.

Shreyas Iyer recently underwent surgery

Shreyas Iyer, a middle-order batsman for India, had successful back surgery earlier this week in London. According to the sources, Iyer won't be able to play in the Test Championship Final at The Oval in June since it will likely take him at least three months to recuperate.

Iyer underwent surgery due to ongoing back problems that caused him to miss numerous international games. The 28-year-old participated in the Border Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2023 again, but he was forced to leave after the first two days of the final Test because of a recurrence of his back problem. Later, he was also disqualified from Australia's three-match ODI series.

Iyer has been an important contributor for India in ODIs and was the team's top run-getter in the 50-over format last season. The Indian management decided to get him treated as soon as possible so that he could have ample time to fully recover from his injury and prepare for the ODI World Cup at home.

The Indian Cricket Board, which posted a statement on their official website earlier this week, had already announced Iyer's surgery. In addition to Iyer, the NCA is now keeping watch over Jasprit Bumrah, India's top pacer. Recently, Bumrah had back surgery in New Zealand.
