‘Itna slow kaun khelta hai bhai’ - Fans slam Devdutt Paddikal for playing slow innings against Punjab Kings in IPL 2023

On 5 April 2023, Punjab Kings took on Rajasthan Royals in the ongoing Indian Premier League. However, Rajasthan failed to win the match by five runs and fans were not happy with the performance of Devdutt Paddikal. While chasing a target of 198 runs, Paddikal scored 21 runs off 26 balls.

His slow inning was the reason why other batters continuously tried to hit big shots and that cost them their wickets. Hence, they failed to stitch a solid partnership in the middle overs and in the end, Rajasthan Royals fell short by five runs. So, fans slammed Devdutt Paddikal on social media for such a poor strike rate.

However, after the match, Rajasthan skipper, Sanju Samson shared the idea of sending Devdutt Paddikal at number four. He said: "The thinking behind Devdutt Padikkal at No. 4 was we knew that they had a left-arm spinner and legspinner who would be bowling in the middle overs. So, it was important for us to have a left-hander." As of now, in two matches of the IPL 2023, Paddikal has scored 23 runs. In the 2022 IPL auction, Rajasthan Royals bought Devdutt Paddikal for INR 7.75 Cr. In that season, he played 17 matches and scored 376 runs, at an average of 22.12.

Speaking of the match, Punjab Kings scored 197 runs for four wickets in 20 overs. In reply, Rajasthan scored 192 runs for seven wickets in 20 overs. Nathan Ellis won the Player of the Series for taking four wickets for 30 runs in four overs. After the match, Sanju Samson said: "They came out with a really positive mindset, they had a really good powerplay and the momentum just carried on with that. Our bowlers tried to vary their lengths and speed on this small ground. It's a high-scoring venue but we did really well to pull the game a bit back after the start they got. Our bowlers did a reasonably good job."
