Former Indian keeper-batter and commentator Parthiv Patel has asserted that the Indian T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav wouldn’t need the entire five-match series against New Zealand to return to form.

Speaking exclusively on Star Sports, Parthiv stated that SKY needs to play 20 to 40 balls in the next game to get back to his old rhythm, highlighting the importance of spending time in the middle.

“You benefit a lot because you know that runs are coming from one end. Then you can take your time and Suryakumar Yadav needs to do that. Obviously, we talk about runs, but in these five T20I matches, Suryakumar needs to spend time in the middle," Parthiv Patel said on Star Sports.

Surya looked in good touch during his brief stay at the crease in the first T20I of the ongoing five-match series against New Zealand. Coming in to bat at No.4, he went on to score 32 runs in 22 balls with four fours and a six at a strike rate of 145.45.

"He is himself saying that he is batting well. That means he is feeling good, but you need runs behind you. Once he plays 20 balls and 40 balls in the next match, then it does not take that much time for a batter of this quality. It doesn't look like he needs the entire series to return to form. He needs just one inning and this is probably the start," he added.

Delving into the details of the first T20I, India batted first and posted a daunting total of 238/7, courtesy of Abhishek Sharma's exceptional 84-run knock off 35 balls with five fours and eight sixes. In the chase, New Zealand could score only 190/7 in 20 overs, losing the game by 48 runs. Varun Chakravarthy and Shivam Dube scalped two wickets apiece.

India will next take on New Zealand in the second T20I on Friday, January 23, in Raipur.
