The first match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy took place in Nagpur on 9 February 2023. India took on Australia and fans were hoping for an enthralling battle between the sides. Pat Cummins won the toss and opted to bat first. Todd Murphy made his debut for the Aussies while Suryakumar Yadav and Srikar Bharat made their debut also for the Men in Blue.
For Australia, David Warner and Usman Khawaja came out to open the innings. But, both of them scored only one run each as Siraj dismissed Khawaja while Shami dismissed Warner. After that, both Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith steadied the ship for the Aussies. Labuschagne scored 49 runs off 123 balls.
India now have a lead of 1-0 over Australia after this win
Steve Smith scored 37 runs off 107 balls while Peter Handscomb scored 31 runs off 84 balls. Finally, they got bundled out for just 177 runs in 63.5 overs. For India, Ravindra Jadeja was the star of the show. He made a remarkable comeback in the team by picking up five wickets. Along with him, Ashwin took three wickets while both Siraj and Shami managed one wicket each. In reply, Indian batters showed great resilience and scored 400 runs in 139.3 overs. Rohit Sharma was the highest scorer as he scored 120 runs off 212 balls, including 15 fours and two sixes. Along with him, Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel also came up with some contributions with the bat. For Australia, Todd Murphy had a dream debut as he picked up seven wickets.
India managed a lead of 223 runs. Australian fans were hoping for a better show from their batters in this innings. But, they failed miserably as they got bundled out for just 91 runs in 32.3 overs. Ravichandran Ashwin took five wickets while Jadeja and Shami managed two wickets each. Axar Patel grabbed only one wicket. Ravindra Jadeja won the player of the match award for his overall performance.
