Former Indian all-rounder and commentator Irfan Pathan has reckoned that while the Indian explosive batter Abhishek Sharma’s strength lies in his aggressive and fearless batting approach, it also makes him highly predictable for the opposition bowlers.

Speaking exclusively on his YouTube channel, Pathan has asserted that it’s high time the opening batter begins to pick and choose his attacking moments of the game before the opposition bowlers decode his batting patterns.

“Abhishek plays fearless cricket, which is very good. But he needs to be selective. If he steps out aggressively on every ball, bowlers will plan for it. Especially bowlers with variations in the powerplay have already troubled him. He has to pick his bowlers and moments wisely. The aggression is fine, but it must have a strategy behind it,” Irfan Pathan said on his YouTube channel.

For the unversed, the dashing opening batter accumulated 163 runs in the five-match T20I series against Australia Down Under at an average of 40.75 to lead the run-scoring charts and emerge as the player of the series.

It’s important to note that Irfan Pathan’s comments perfectly align with the remarks made by the Australian ace pacer Josh Hazlewood, who stated that bowlers study the opposition batters and find the patterns and test them.

“That is just how it usually goes. Players arrive and do well early. Then bowlers study them, find patterns, and test them. The great players are the ones who fight through that phase, expand their game, and come out stronger to dominate for years,” Josh Hazlewood said after the second T20I.

Speaking about his T20I record, Sharma has accumulated 1012 runs from 29 T20Is at an average of 37.48 and a strike rate of 189.51 with two centuries and six half-centuries. He will be next seen playing the T20I series against South Africa at home, starting on Tuesday, December 9 in Odisha.
