The 18th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is set to begin on March 21, 2025. Over the past 17 seasons, many teams have claimed the trophy, but some have faced heartbreak by finishing as runners-up. Despite coming so close to winning the prestigious title, their fans were left disappointed after losses in the finals.
In the inaugural season of 2008, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) finished as runners-up after losing to Rajasthan Royals (RR) in Mumbai. The second season, held in South Africa, saw Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) lose to the Deccan Chargers (DC) in the final in Johannesburg. In 2010, Mumbai Indians (MI) missed their chance to win a maiden title, losing to CSK in Chennai.
The following year, CSK defended their title by defeating RCB in the final. In 2012, CSK was close to a hat-trick of titles but lost to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). In 2013, CSK were runners-up again, as MI secured their first title. In 2014, Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) ended as runners-up after losing to KKR by three wickets in Bangalore.
The next two seasons saw CSK and RCB finish as runners-up, respectively. Despite Virat Kohli’s record-breaking 973-run season in 2016, RCB fell short against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), leaving their fans heartbroken. In 2017, Rising Pune Supergiants (RPS) lost the final by just one run to MI in Hyderabad.
In 2018, SRH were beaten by CSK, but CSK failed to defend their title in 2019 as MI defeated them again. In 2020, Delhi Capitals (DC) aimed for their maiden title but lost to MI in Dubai. In 2021, KKR was runners-up after losing to CSK in another Dubai final. Gujarat Titans (GT) had a dream debut in 2022, winning their maiden IPL title by defeating Rajasthan Royals (RR).
However, in 2023, they ended as runners-up against CSK in Ahmedabad in front of their home crowd. In the most recent edition, Pat Cummins-led SRH lost the final to KKR. CSK has won the IPL five times and also holds the record for the most runners-up finishes, with five so far.
