IPL: RCB vs KKR

The Indian Premier League (IPL) has been one of the top franchise leagues over the years, known for its high-profile and thrilling matches. Among the many rivalries, the one between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) stands out. Fans from both sides always look forward to their clashes.

Last season, RCB finished fourth in the league stage, qualifying for the playoffs but losing to Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the Eliminator. Meanwhile, KKR dominated the group stage, finishing at the top with 20 points from 14 games (nine wins, three losses). They then defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in both the first playoff and the final to secure their third IPL title.

As defending champions, the challenge will be even tougher this time, with expectations running high. KKR will also be without last season’s mentor, Gautam Gambhir, who is now the head coach of the Indian men’s team. Additionally, their title-winning captain, Shreyas Iyer, has joined Punjab Kings (PBKS) after being bought in the auction.

Despite these changes, KKR will begin their IPL 2025 campaign on 22 March at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata against RCB. This match will also serve as the tournament opener. The reverse fixture will be played at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on 17 May, marking the last group-stage match for both teams.

Looking at the head-to-head record, KKR has been dominant, winning 20 of their 34 encounters, while RCB has won 14 times. RCB’s last victory over KKR came in the 2022 season. Since then, they have lost all four meetings across the last two editions.

This season, both teams will have new captains. RCB has already confirmed Rajat Patidar as their skipper. However, KKR is yet to announce their captain. Reports suggest the captaincy race is between Venkatesh Iyer and the experienced Ajinkya Rahane.

Speculation is growing that Venkatesh Iyer might get the nod, especially since KKR bought him for INR 23.75 crore in the auction, and leadership responsibilities could have played a role in that decision.
