The Indian Premier League (IPL) has transformed the shortest format since its beginning in 2008. With the introduction of the platform, various teams and players have delivered dazzling cricket, keeping fans on the edge of their seats and seeing high-voltage action.
Following the conclusion of the season, players are recognized for their efforts in a variety of categories, including the IPL's Most Valuable Player (MVP) award. The honor, which debuted in 2008, was originally known as the 'Man of the Tournament' title. However, it was only in 2013 that the name was changed to MVP.
The MVP award is presented to the player who has the most fantasy points at the end of a given season. The scoring system is unique, with points awarded for each boundary, six, wicket, dot ball, catch, run-out, and stumping.
Notably, a player is awarded 2.5 points for every four, 3.5 points for every six, 3.5 points for a wicket, 1 point for a dot ball, and 2.5 points for every catch and stumping.
MVP for IPL 2024: Sunil Narine (KKR)
The final of the IPL 2024 was played between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders in an epic clash. This saw KKR defeating SRH soundly in the final clash to become three-time IPL champions under the captaincy of Shreyas Iyer.
Meanwhile, at the end of the IPL 2024, the 17th season on Sunday (May 27), multiple accolades were distributed to the players who excelled in the final and the entire tournament. Among the major awards is the title of Most Valuable Player (MVP), which honors the player who has had the most impact on their team's success this season.
The MVP award is given to the player whose diverse performance, whether batting or bowling, has been instrumental in propelling their team forward. This time, the winner was KKR’s Sunil Narine. Sunil Narine (2012, 2018, 2024) has won the MVP award the most times, followed by Andre Russell (2015, 2019) and Shane Watson (2008, 2013), all of whom have won twice.
Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, and Harshal Patel are the only three Indian players who have received the award in prior years.
