IPL: MI vs GT

Mumbai Indians (MI) had a forgettable IPL season last year, finishing at the bottom of the table in tenth place with just eight points from 14 games. MI fans were particularly unhappy with newly appointed captain Hardik Pandya, whom the franchise brought back from the Gujarat Titans (GT).

GT entered the IPL in 2022 and immediately made an impact by winning the title in their debut season under Hardik’s leadership. They followed it up with another strong campaign in 2023, finishing as runners-up after losing the final to Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

Given his success, MI decided to bring Hardik back—he had previously played for MI—and hand him the captaincy, replacing their veteran leader, Rohit Sharma. However, the move backfired, and MI endured one of their worst seasons.

Despite the setback, MI has chosen to back Hardik, confirming that while Rohit has been retained as a player, Hardik will continue as captain for IPL 2025. This sets up an intriguing matchup against GT, a team that has had the upper hand over MI in recent seasons.

In five meetings over the last three years, GT has won three times, while MI has managed just two victories. Last season, they faced each other only once, with GT winning a close contest by six runs in Ahmedabad. In IPL 2025, the teams will meet twice—first on 29 March in Ahmedabad and then again on 6 May at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

GT also had a disappointing campaign last season after their dominant first two years. With Hardik leaving, Shubman Gill was appointed captain, but he could only guide the team to eighth place, finishing with 12 points in 14 matches.

Despite the struggles, the GT management has placed immense trust in the young opener, and he will lead the side once again to deliver a much-improved performance. MI will kick off their campaign on 23 March against CSK in Chennai, while GT will begin their season against Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on 25 March.
