The world's top T20 cricket league, the Indian Premier League (IPL), was founded in 2008 and draws the best players from both domestic and international teams. The IPL Purple Cap, given to the bowler who finishes with the most wickets in a season, is one of the most coveted individual awards in the competition. Just like the Orange Cap is awarded to the player who scores the most runs, the Purple Cap is a representation of bowling supremacy.
Several iconic bowlers have won this award over the years, demonstrating their talent and reliability on cricket's biggest stage. Throughout the competition, the bowler who takes the most wickets is the one wearing the Purple Cap. The Purple Cap is given to the bowler with the best economy rate when two or more bowlers have the same number of wickets.
In the first season in 2008, Sohail Tanvir of Pakistan, who was playing for the Rajasthan Royals, took home the Purple Cap. He helped the Royals win the IPL for the first time ever by taking 22 wickets in 11 games. The most recent addition to the list is Prasidh Krishna, who won the Purple Cap after taking more than 25 wickets in 15 games this season.
Here is the complete list of winners of the award over the years.
