The 18th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will take place in 2025, with teams preparing strong squads after the mega auction. Over the years, several teams have claimed the IPL title, bringing immense joy to their fans.
In 2008, Shane Warne led Rajasthan Royals (RR) to the first IPL title by defeating Chennai Super Kings (CSK). In 2009, Adam Gilchrist captained Deccan Chargers (DC) to victory over Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). CSK secured back-to-back titles in 2010 and 2011, defeating Mumbai Indians (MI) and RCB, respectively.
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) won their maiden title in 2012, preventing CSK from a hat-trick. MI began their dominance in 2013, claiming five titles between 2013 and 2020 (2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020), becoming the second team after CSK to win back-to-back seasons twice.
KKR secured their second title in 2014. In 2016, despite Virat Kohli’s record of 973 runs, RCB lost the final to Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). CSK won their third and fourth titles in 2018 and 2021, defeating SRH and KKR in the finals.
Gujarat Titans (GT) surprised everyone in 2022, winning the title in their debut season under Hardik Pandya’s leadership by defeating RR. In 2023, MS Dhoni guided CSK to their fifth title, defeating GT in Ahmedabad. In 2024, Shreyas Iyer led KKR to their third title by overcoming Pat Cummins-led SRH. KKR will now defend their title in the upcoming season.
CSK and MI share the record for the most titles, with five each, followed by KKR with three. RCB have reached the final three times without winning, the most for any team. Along with PBKS (initially Kings XI Punjab, KXIP) and DC (initially Delhi Daredevils, DD), they remained titleless since the IPL’s start in 2008. CSK has played in a record 10 finals, the most by any franchise.
