Last season’s runners-up, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), began their IPL 2025 campaign with a commanding 44-run win over Rajasthan Royals (RR) in Hyderabad. Playing in front of their home crowd, SRH’s batters entertained with massive sixes. Ishan Kishan starred with a stunning maiden IPL century on his SRH debut, earning the Player of the Match award.
As expected, Riyan Parag led RR in the absence of Sanju Samson and won the toss. He opted to bowl first and confirmed that Samson was part of the impact players’ list. However, the decision backfired as SRH posted a mammoth 286/6 in 20 overs.
Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head provided a blistering start, adding 45 runs in just 3.1 overs before Abhishek fell for 24. Head and Ishan then built an explosive 85-run partnership in just 6.2 overs. Head departed for 67 off 31, but Ishan continued his assault, remaining unbeaten on 106 off 47 balls at a staggering strike rate of 225.53, hitting 11 fours and six sixes.
Nitish Kumar Reddy (30 off 15) and Heinrich Klaasen (34 off 14) also played impactful cameos. Ishan shared a 72-run stand in 4.5 overs with Nitish and added 56 runs in four overs with Klaasen. For RR, Tushar Deshpande took three wickets, while Maheesh Theekshana picked up two.
Let’s take a look at RR’s chase
Chasing a record target of 287, RR brought in Samson as an impact player to open alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal. However, Jaiswal, Parag, and Nitish Rana fell cheaply, putting RR on the back foot. Samson (66 off 37) and Dhruv Jurel (70 off 35) tried to revive the innings with a 111-run partnership for the fourth wicket in 9.5 overs.
Later, Shubham Dube played an explosive knock of 34* off 11 balls, including four sixes and a boundary, adding 80 runs for the sixth wicket in 5.3 overs with Shimron Hetmyer (42 off 23). Despite their efforts, RR fell short, finishing at 242/6 in 20 overs as SRH clinched victory by 44 runs.
SRH will next face Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in Hyderabad on March 27, while RR will take on Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in Guwahati on March 26.
