Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) secured their first win of IPL 2025 with a commanding five-wicket victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Hyderabad. After restricting SRH to 190/9, LSG chased down the target in just 16.1 overs. Shardul Thakur was the standout performer with the ball, claiming four wickets and earning the Player of the Match award.
LSG skipper Rishabh Pant won the toss and opted to bowl first, a decision that left some fans surprised. However, the LSG bowlers did an excellent job in keeping SRH under the 200-run mark. Thakur was brilliant, picking up four wickets, including two crucial scalps in the powerplay.
He received support from Avesh Khan, Digvesh Rathi, Ravi Bishnoi, and Prince Yadav, who took a wicket each. SRH's batting innings saw Travis Head play a solid knock of 47 off 28 balls, but both Abhishek Sharma and last game's centurion, Ishan Kishan, fell cheaply. Nitish Kumar Reddy contributed 32 off 28, while Heinrich Klaasen added 26 off 17.
Aniket Verma played a fiery cameo, smashing 36 off 13 balls at a strike rate of 276.92, and skipper Pat Cummins provided late fireworks with 18 off just four deliveries at a staggering strike rate of 450.00.
Let’s take a look at LSG’s chase
In response, LSG lost Aiden Markram early as his struggles as an opener continued. However, Mitchell Marsh and Nicholas Pooran took charge with an explosive partnership that lit up the stadium. Pooran was in devastating form, hammering 70 off just 26 balls at a strike rate of 269.23, including six fours and six sixes.
Marsh played an equally vital role, scoring 52 off 31 deliveries. Their 116-run stand for the second wicket in just 7.1 overs put LSG in complete control. Pant failed to make an impact, managing only 15 off 15 balls, but Abdul Samad finished the chase in style with an unbeaten 22 off just eight deliveries.
SRH skipper Pat Cummins led from the front with two wickets, but his efforts were not enough to stop LSG’s powerful batting lineup. With this win, LSG will head into their next match against Punjab Kings (PBKS) in Lucknow on 1 April. Meanwhile, SRH will look to bounce back when they take on Delhi Capitals (DC) in Visakhapatnam on March 30.
