Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) clinched a thrilling two-run victory over Rajasthan Royals (RR) in Jaipur in the ongoing IPL 2025. Avesh Khan was the star of the night with a brilliant spell at the death, earning him the Player of the Match award for his efforts while defending a total of 181.
RR were without their regular skipper Sanju Samson, who missed the match due to an abdominal injury picked up against Delhi Capitals. Riyan Parag led the team in his absence. After winning the toss, LSG captain Rishabh Pant chose to bat first.
Batting first, LSG posted 180/5 in 20 overs. Aiden Markram top-scored with a composed 66 off 45 balls, while Ayush Badoni contributed a steady 50 from 34. Despite failures from big names like Mitchell Marsh, Nicholas Pooran, and Pant, a late cameo from Abdul Samad – 30 not out from just 10 balls – gave the innings a boost.
He smashed four sixes and batted at a strike rate of 300.00. For RR, Wanindu Hasaranga picked up two wickets, while Tushar Deshpande, Sandeep Sharma, and Jofra Archer claimed one each.
Let’s take a look at RR’s chase
In reply, all eyes were on 14-year-old debutant Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who made history as the youngest ever IPL debutant. And as an impact player, he didn’t disappoint. On the very first ball he faced, he launched Shardul Thakur for a six over covers.
Fearless and composed, the left-hander scored 34 off 20 balls, including two fours and three sixes. Yashasvi Jaiswal was in top form, scoring 74 from 52 balls. Nitish Rana, however, fell cheaply for eight. Stand-in skipper Riyan Parag chipped in with a valuable 39 from 26.
At one stage, RR seemed in full control. But when Parag got out, the chase became tricky. With 20 runs needed from the last two overs and new batters – Shimron Hetmyer and Dhruv Jurel – at the crease, pressure mounted.
Prince Yadav conceded 11 in the 19th over, leaving RR needing nine off the last. Avesh Khan then delivered a clutch final over, giving away just six runs and taking a wicket to seal a memorable win for LSG.
Avesh finished with three wickets, while Markram and Thakur picked up one each. With this win, LSG climbed to fourth in the standings with 10 points from eight matches and a net run rate of +0.088. RR, on the other hand, continue to struggle, sitting in eighth with four points from eight games and a net run rate of -0.633.
LSG next face Delhi Capitals (DC) on 22 April in Lucknow. RR will look to bounce back when they play Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in Bengaluru on 24 April.
