Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) suffered a 42-run defeat against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the 65th match of the ongoing IPL 2025, held at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow. SRH’s Ishan Kishan was named Player of the Match for his unbeaten, match-winning knock of 94 runs off just 48 balls.
RCB captain Jitesh Sharma won the toss and opted to bowl first. Jitesh was the stand-in captain as their regular skipper, Rajat Patidar, came in as an impact substitute. However, the decision backfired as the SRH batters capitalised fully, posting a massive 231/6 in their 20 overs.
Kishan led the charge with his powerful innings, and although he didn’t receive a huge contribution from the middle order, there were handy cameos from Abhishek Sharma (34 off 17), Heinrich Klaasen (24 off 13), and Aniket Verma (26 off 9).
Towards the end, skipper Pat Cummins added a useful unbeaten 13 off 6 balls. For RCB, Romario Shepherd was the most effective bowler, picking up two wickets. Krunal Pandya, Suyash Sharma, Lungi Ngidi, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar claimed one wicket each.
Let’s take a look at RCB’s Chase
In reply, RCB had a flying start, thanks to their in-form openers, Virat Kohli and Phil Salt. The duo stitched together an 80-run partnership in just seven overs. Kohli looked in fine touch before he was dismissed for 43 off 25 balls. Salt continued to score freely, supported by contributions from the middle order, and brought up a quickfire 62 off 32 deliveries.
At 173/4 in 15.4 overs, RCB looked well-positioned to chase down the target with power-hitters like Romario Shepherd, Jitesh Sharma, and Tim David still to come. However, things took a shocking turn as RCB collapsed dramatically, losing their final seven wickets for just 16 runs. They were bowled out for 189 in 19.5 overs, missing a crucial chance to secure a top-two finish in the league stage.
For SRH, captain Pat Cummins led the bowling attack with figures of 3/28. Eshan Malinga delivered a stellar performance in the death overs, picking up two key wickets. Harshal Patel, Jaydev Unadkat, Nitish Kumar Reddy, and Harsh Dubey chipped in with one wicket each.
After this result, RCB have slipped to third place in the points table with 17 points from 13 games and a net run rate of +0.255. SRH, although out of playoff contention, are now in the eighth place with 11 points in 13 games and a net run rate of -0.737.
RCB will face Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) next on May 27 in Lucknow, while SRH will take on Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on May 25 in Delhi.
