Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) finally registered a victory at their home ground, the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, in the ongoing IPL 2025 when they defeated Rajasthan Royals (RR) by 11 runs yesterday.
RCB’s Josh Hazlewood won the Player of the Match award for his exceptional four-wicket spell, especially his death-over bowling. After winning the toss, RR’s stand-in skipper Riyan Parag decided to bowl first, and it was a fantastic start by the RCB opening pair, Phil Salt and Virat Kohli. They added 61 runs in 6.4 overs before Salt got out for 26 (23).
Then, at number three, Devdutt Padikkal came in and joined Kohli in the middle. They built a 95-run partnership for the second wicket in 8.3 overs. Kohli showed his consistency once again, scoring 70 off 42 balls at a strike rate of 166.66. After this knock, he now sits second in the race for the Orange Cap.
Padikkal also impressed with a quick 50 off 27 balls at a staggering strike rate of 185.18. In the end, Tim David added 23 (15), and Jitesh Sharma chipped in with an unbeaten 20 off 10 as RCB posted 205/5 in 20 overs. For RR, Sandeep Sharma picked up two wickets, while Wanindu Hasaranga and Jofra Archer took one each.
Let’s take a look at RR’s chase
In reply, RR needed a blistering start, and that was delivered by the pair of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Vaibhav Suryavanshi. They added 52 runs in just 4.2 overs before Vaibhav got out for 16 (12). Jaiswal continued to play his strokes and scored 49 off just 19 balls at a strike rate of 257.89.
This knock followed three consecutive fifties in his last three games, showing his consistency once again. Both Nitish Rana (28 off 22) and Parag (22 off 10) got starts but failed to convert them. Both wickets were taken by Krunal Pandya, and at that moment, those breakthroughs were crucial to shift the momentum towards RCB.
Shimron Hetmyer was dismissed for 11 off eight balls, and after 17 overs, RR were 166/5, needing 40 off the remaining 18 balls. Then, RCB skipper Rajat Patidar backed Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s experience, but it didn’t go as planned, as RR smashed him for 22 runs. With two overs remaining, RR needed only 18 off 12 balls.
It seemed the game was firmly in RR’s control, but then Josh Hazlewood produced a magical over, taking two wickets while conceding only one run. In the final over, Yash Dayal held his nerve, conceding just five runs while taking one wicket and being involved in a run-out. Ultimately, RCB snatched victory from RR’s grasp.
With this win, RCB is now in third place with 12 points from nine games and a net run rate of +0.482. For RR, their playoff hopes are nearly over as they remain in eighth place with four points from nine games and a net run rate of -0.625. RCB’s next match is against Delhi Capitals (DC) on 27 April in Delhi, while RR will face Gujarat Titans (GT) in Jaipur on 28 April.
