Chennai Super Kings (CSK) suffered their fourth loss in five games in the ongoing IPL 2025 as Punjab Kings (PBKS) defeated them by 18 runs in Mullanpur. PBKS’ young opener, Priyansh Arya, was named Player of the Match for his outstanding century.
After winning the toss, PBKS skipper Shreyas Iyer opted to bat first. The decision looked questionable early on as PBKS found themselves struggling at 83/5 in eight overs. However, opener Priyansh Arya stood firm at one end and continued to showcase his talent with some outstanding shots against CSK’s experienced bowling attack.
Priyansh smashed his maiden IPL century off just 39 balls, becoming the fastest Indian uncapped batter to score an IPL hundred. He eventually scored 103 off 42 balls at a strike rate of 245.23, including seven fours and nine sixes.
In the latter half of the innings, Shashank Singh (52* off 36) and Marco Jansen (34* off 19) played vital cameos to help PBKS post a strong total of 219/6 in 20 overs. For CSK, Khaleel Ahmed and Ravichandran Ashwin took two wickets each, while Noor Ahmad and Mukesh Choudhary chipped in with one wicket apiece.
Let’s take a look at CSK’s chase
Chasing 220, CSK’s opening pair of Rachin Ravindra and Devon Conway gave them a steady start, putting up 61 runs for the first wicket in 6.3 overs. Rachin was dismissed for 36 off 23 balls, followed by skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad falling cheaply for just one run off three balls.
Shivam Dube looked promising during his stay at the crease, scoring 42 off 27 deliveries, but his dismissal slowed CSK’s momentum. After his wicket, MS Dhoni walked in. However, in the 18th over, Devon Conway was retired out, seemingly due to fitness concerns, and was replaced by Ravindra Jadeja.
Dhoni struck one four and three sixes in his 27-run knock off 12 balls, but the chase had slipped too far from CSK’s grasp. They eventually finished at 201/5 in 20 overs, falling 18 runs short of the target.
For PBKS, Lockie Ferguson picked up two wickets, while Glenn Maxwell and Yash Thakur claimed one each. With this victory, PBKS climbed to the fourth spot on the points table with six points and a net run rate of +0.289. Their next match is against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Hyderabad on 12 April.
Meanwhile, CSK’s struggles continue, and they will aim to bounce back in their next game against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at home in Chennai on 11 April.
