Mumbai Indians (MI) handed a crushing defeat to the defending champions, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), in the ongoing IPL 2025 by eight wickets. At the iconic Wankhede Stadium, in front of the home crowd, MI secured their first win after losing their first two encounters this season.
MI’s 23-year-old left-arm pacer from Punjab, on his debut, took four wickets and grabbed the Player of the Match award. After winning the toss, MI skipper Hardik Pandya opted to bowl first, and for the visitors, that decision turned out to be a nightmare as KKR were bundled out for just 116 runs in 16.2 overs.
Only Angkrish Raghuvanshi (26 off 16) and Ramandeep Singh (22 off 12) managed to cross the 20-run mark. They kept losing wickets at regular intervals, and due to the lack of a single big partnership, they failed to cross even the 120-run mark. For MI, the star of the show was debutant Ashwani Kumar.
On his very first delivery in the IPL, he took the wicket of KKR skipper Ajinkya Rahane, followed by the dismissals of Manish Pandey, Rinku Singh, and Andre Russell. Along with him, Deepak Chahar (two wickets) and Trent Boult (one wicket) provided early breakthroughs. Hardik, Vignesh Puthur, and Mitchell Santner also grabbed one wicket each.
Let’s take a look at MI’s chase
In reply, MI batters easily chased down the target in just 12.5 overs, with eight wickets in hand. Opener Ryan Rickelton led the charge with the bat, remaining not out on 62 off 41 balls, alongside Suryakumar Yadav’s entertaining unbeaten 27-run cameo off nine balls.
However, it was another disappointing outing for Rohit Sharma this season (21 runs in three matches) as he was dismissed by Russell. Russell was the only KKR bowler to take wickets, also removing Will Jacks.
With this loss, KKR now sit at the bottom of the table with two points in three games, with a net run rate of -1.428, while MI have moved to sixth place with two points in three games, with a net run rate of +0.309. KKR’s next match is against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Kolkata on April 3, while MI will lock horns with Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on April 4.
