Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) set up a Qualifier One clash with Punjab Kings (PBKS) as they defeated Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) by six wickets in Lucknow in the last league-stage clash of the ongoing IPL 2025. It was a must-win match for RCB to finish the league stage within the top two spots and secure a place in Qualifier One.
They did it in style, and their skipper Jitesh Sharma stole the show, smashing an unbeaten 85 off 33 balls in a successful chase of 228 and winning the Player of the Match award. After winning the toss, Jitesh asked the home team to bat first, and they put up a mammoth score of 227/3 in 20 overs.
Mitchell Marsh played superbly in his 67-run knock off 37 balls, but it was the LSG skipper, Rishabh Pant, who finally showed what he can do with the bat on his day as he smashed his second IPL ton.
He remained not out on 118 off 61 and, after being poor throughout the season with the bat, finally ended the season on a positive note. For RCB, Nuwan Thushara, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, and Romario Shepherd bagged one wicket each.
Let’s take a look at RCB’s Chase
In reply, RCB had a brisk start, courtesy of Phil Salt and Virat Kohli. After adding 61 for the first wicket in 5.4 overs, Salt got out for 30 off 19. Then, they lost both Rajat Patidar, who came in as an impact substitute, and Liam Livingstone cheaply, and things were crumbling for RCB.
But then Mayank Agarwal and Kohli steadied the innings, as Kohli smashed his eighth fifty of the season. When Kohli got out on 54 off 30, skipper Jitesh Sharma walked in and delivered a top knock, leading his team from the front.
Eventually, he remained not out on 85 off 33, along with Agarwal’s 41* off 23, as RCB chased down the target in 18.4 overs with six wickets in hand. It turned out to be RCB’s highest-ever successful chase in the IPL and, overall, the third-highest successful chase in IPL history.
With this win, RCB finished the league stage in second place with 19 points in 14 games and a net run rate of +0.301. Now, they will face PBKS in Qualifier One in Mullanpur on 29 May. LSG finished their season in seventh place with 12 points in 14 games and a net run rate of -0.376.
