MS Dhoni secured his first win after returning as Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain, guiding the team to a five-wicket victory over Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in Lucknow in the ongoing IPL 2025. Dhoni was named Player of the Match for his brilliant match-winning cameo of 26* off just 11 balls.
After winning the toss, Dhoni opted to bowl first. LSG had a shaky start as Aiden Markram was dismissed for just six runs. It was also a rare failure for Nicholas Pooran, who managed only eight. However, skipper Rishabh Pant stabilised the innings with a 50-run partnership for the third wicket alongside Mitchell Marsh.
Marsh contributed 30 off 25 balls, while Pant went on to score his first half-century of the season, ending with 63 off 49 balls. Late cameos from Ayush Badoni (22 off 17) and Abdul Samad (20 off 11) helped LSG post a competitive total of 166/7 in 20 overs.
For CSK, Ravindra Jadeja and Matheesha Pathirana picked up two wickets each, while Anshul Kamboj and Khaleel Ahmed chipped in with one apiece.
Let’s take a look at CSK’s chase
In response, debutante Sheikh Rasheed opened the innings for CSK alongside Rachin Ravindra. Rasheed impressed with a quick 27 off 19 balls, and Rachin added a fluent 37 off 22. However, CSK lost momentum as Rahul Tripathi and Jadeja fell cheaply, and Vijay Shankar was dismissed for just nine. At 111/5 after 15 overs, CSK were in a spot of bother.
Dhoni then walked in to join Shivam Dube in the middle. The experienced skipper turned back the clock with a vintage finish, smashing an unbeaten 26 off 11 balls. Dube supported him well, anchoring the chase with 43* off 37 deliveries. Together, they guided CSK home in 19.3 overs with five wickets in hand.
Dhoni’s impact wasn’t limited to the bat. His tactical brilliance as captain—especially with field placements and bowling rotations—stood out throughout the match. He was also exceptional behind the stumps, pulling off a catch, a stumping, and a run-out.
Dhoni also became the first wicketkeeper in IPL history with 200 dismissals. Despite the win, CSK remained at the bottom of the table with four points from seven games and a net run rate of -1.276. On the other hand, LSG, despite the defeat, are currently in fourth place with eight points from seven matches and a net run rate of +0.086.
CSK will next face Mumbai Indians (MI) in Mumbai on April 20, while LSG take on Rajasthan Royals (RR) in Jaipur on April 19.
