Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) survived a scare as they defeated Rajasthan Royals (RR) by just one run in Kolkata in the ongoing IPL 2025. After posting 206/4 on the board in 20 overs, KKR conceded 205 in 20 overs while taking eight wickets and ultimately, kept their playoff dreams alive with this narrow win.
KKR’s Andre Russell won the Player of the Match award for his unbeaten 57-run knock off 25 balls. After winning the toss, KKR skipper Ajinkya Rahane opted to bat first and his batters responded well as they posted a competitive total of 206/4 in 20 overs.
Sunil Narine got out cheaply for just 11 runs off nine balls but Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Rahane put up a decent partnership of 56 runs for the second wicket. Gurbaz scored 35 (25) while Rahane added 30 (24). Then, KKR management took a wise decision of sending Russell at number five and that move paid off.
He and Angkrish Raghuvanshi added 61 runs for the fourth wicket as Angkrish scored 44 off 31. Russell showcased his power-hitting despite batting on a tricky pitch and ultimately remained not out on 57 off 25, at a strike rate of 228.00.
Even Rinku Singh played an effective unbeaten cameo of 19 runs off six balls as that helped the defending champions to reach that total. For RR, Riyan Parag, Maheesh Theekshana, Yudhvir Singh, and Jofra Archer took one wicket each.
Let’s take a look at RR’s Chase
In reply, KKR bowlers were on song as they dismissed the top order of RR quickly and after 7.5 overs, RR were 71/5. But then, skipper Parag and Shimron Hetmyer managed a counterattacking partnership of 92 runs for the sixth wicket. Hetmyer scored 29 off 23 but it was Parag who played an unforgettable knock of 95 off 45, at a strike rate of 211.11.
After those wickets, KKR fans were thinking that the game might be in their hands but again, the pair of Archer and Shubham Dubey tried their best as in the last over, RR needed 22 runs. After three runs in the first two balls, Dubey hit Vaibhav Arora for two sixes and one four and suddenly, the equation came down to three runs needed off the last ball.
But Vaibhav kept his nerves, bowled a yorker and Dubey added only one run as Archer got run out for 12 off eight balls. Dubey remained not out on 25 off 14. With this win, KKR are still in the race for the playoffs, currently sitting in the sixth position with 11 points in 11 games, with a net run rate of +0.249.
RR are already out of the playoff race this season and after this result, they remain at the eighth position with just six points in 12 games, with a net run rate of -0.718. KKR’s next match is against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Kolkata on 7 May while RR will play against CSK in Chennai on 12 May.
