Another defeat for the defending champions, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), as Gujarat Titans (GT) defeated them at the Eden Gardens by 39 runs in the ongoing IPL 2025. The GT skipper, Shubman Gill, was named the Player of the Match for his 90-run innings while batting first. After winning the toss, KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane decided to field first.
Hence, for GT, both Gill and Sai Sudharsan came out to open, and they put up a 114-run opening partnership in 12.2 overs. Sudharsan showed his consistency once again by scoring 52 off 36, while Gill continued to play his shots.
Then, Jos Buttler joined Gill in the middle at number three, but unfortunately, Gill missed a deserving century by just 10 runs, getting out on 90 (55) at a strike rate of 163.63. Buttler remained not out on 41 (23) as GT posted a competitive total of 198/3 in 20 overs. For the home side, Andre Russell, Vaibhav Arora, and Harshit Rana bagged one wicket each.
Let’s take a look at KKR’s chase
In yesterday’s game, KKR dropped their star wicketkeeper-batter, Quinton de Kock, and included Rahmanullah Gurbaz in the playing XI. Hence, in reply, Gurbaz came out to open along with Sunil Narine, as was expected among fans. But Gurbaz also failed, as he scored only one. Narine added only 17 (13), but the skipper, Rahane, was the lone warrior with 50 (36).
Then, Venkatesh Iyer’s struggles came to an end after adding 14 runs off 19 balls. Explosive batters like Rinku Singh (17 off 14) and Andre Russell (21 off 15) also failed as GT spinners were getting some grip from the pitch.
Angkrish Raghuvanshi, batting at number nine as an impact player, scored an unbeaten 27 off 13 and showed some intent, but KKR ultimately fell short by 39 runs as they scored 159/8 in 20 overs. For GT, both Prasidh Krishna and Rashid Khan took two wickets each, while Mohammed Siraj, Ishant Sharma, Washington Sundar, and Sai Kishore bagged one each.
After this result, GT are in the top spot with 12 points in eight games, with a net run rate of +1.104, and KKR are in seventh spot with six points in eight games, with a net run rate of +0.212. GT’s next match is against Rajasthan Royals (RR) in Jaipur on 28 April, while KKR will face Punjab Kings (PBKS) on 26 April in Kolkata.
