Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) chances of making the playoffs got even slimmer after a narrow two-wicket defeat against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Kolkata in the ongoing IPL 2025. CSK spinner Noor Ahmad was named Player of the Match for his brilliant four-wicket spell.
In this must-win game for the defending champions, KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane won the toss and chose to bat first. He also confirmed that Venkatesh Iyer was unavailable due to stitches in his hand, with Manish Pandey replacing him in the playing XI. KKR put up a decent total of 179/6 in 20 overs.
Rahmanullah Gurbaz fell early for just 11 off nine balls, but Sunil Narine and Rahane gave KKR a good start, taking the team to 69/1 by the seventh over. However, KKR then lost wickets at regular intervals, thanks to the young Afghan spinner Noor Ahmad, who picked up four wickets.
For KKR, Narine scored 26 off 17, Rahane top-scored with 48 from 33 balls, Andre Russell smashed 38 off 21, and Manish Pandey stayed unbeaten with 36 from 28 deliveries. For CSK, Ravindra Jadeja and Anshul Kamboj also took one wicket each alongside Noor.
Let’s take a look at CSK’s Chase
In reply, CSK had a poor start as Ayush Mhatre was dismissed on just the second ball. Debutant Urvil Patel then joined Devon Conway at the crease. Conway was out for a two-ball duck, but Urvil made a strong impact, scoring 31 off just 11 balls with a strike rate of 281.81.
KKR struck back quickly, removing Ashwin and Jadeja, reducing CSK to 60/5 in just 5.2 overs. But Dewald Brevis and Shivam Dube turned the game around with a 67-run partnership for the sixth wicket. Brevis smashed 52 off 25 balls, including a massive 30-run over against Vaibhav Arora (three fours and three sixes), changing the momentum completely.
Dube scored a steady 45 off 40, and MS Dhoni finished the chase with an unbeaten 17 from 18 balls. CSK reached the target in 19.4 overs, winning with two wickets in hand. For KKR, Vaibhav Arora took three wickets but conceded 48 runs in three overs. Harshit Rana and Varun Chakravarthy picked up two wickets each, while Moeen Ali took one.
With this win, CSK remained at the bottom of the table with six points from 12 matches and a net run rate of -0.992. KKR are now sixth with 11 points from 12 games and a net run rate of +0.193.
KKR still have a slim mathematical chance of qualifying for the playoffs. Their next game is against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Hyderabad on 10 May. CSK will play Rajasthan Royals (RR) in Chennai on 12 May.
