Gujarat Titans (GT) suffered a 33-run defeat against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the 64th match of IPL 2025 in Ahmedabad. Despite being out of the playoff race, LSG put on a strong performance and beat the table-toppers, who are one of the four teams already qualified for the playoffs.
Mitchell Marsh was named Player of the Match after scoring his maiden IPL century, which played a key role in LSG’s win. GT captain Shubman Gill won the toss and chose to bowl first. But the decision didn’t go well as LSG posted a massive 235/2 in 20 overs.
Mitchell Marsh and Aiden Markram gave LSG a flying start with a 91-run opening stand. Markram scored 36 off 24 balls before getting out. Nicholas Pooran then came in at number three and added 121 runs with Marsh for the second wicket.
Marsh went on to score his first IPL hundred, smashing 117 runs off 64 balls. Pooran also found form, staying unbeaten on 56 off just 27 deliveries. Captain Rishabh Pant chipped in with a quick cameo, scoring 16 not out off 6 balls. For GT, only Arshad Khan and Sai Kishore managed to take one wicket each.
Let’s take a look at GT’s Chase
In the chase, GT needed a strong start. Their top three—Sai Sudharsan (21 off 16), Shubman Gill (35 off 20), and Jos Buttler (33 off 18)—all got starts but failed to build big innings. Sherfane Rutherford and M Shahrukh Khan kept GT in the game for a while, adding 86 runs for the fourth wicket in just 6.4 overs. At one point, it looked like GT might pull off the chase.
However, things fell apart quickly. Rutherford got out for 38 off 22 balls, while Shahrukh scored 57 off 29. After their dismissals, GT couldn’t build another partnership and ended with 202/9 in 20 overs.
Despite the loss, GT remained at the top of the points table with 18 points from 13 games and a net run rate of +0.602. They will face Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in their final league match on 25 May in Ahmedabad. A win could help them secure a top-two finish, giving them a chance to play in Qualifier 1.
LSG, on the other hand, moved up to sixth place with 12 points in 13 matches. Their net run rate stands at -0.337. They will look to end the season on a high when they face Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), another playoff-bound team, on 27 May in Lucknow.
